Mowing the lawn thinking about the next sculpture wondering what all the grass thinks about being the same height, we just do not know what a blade of grass thinks, then I thought maybe it does not matter, wow all that seems so not important when we listen to the issues in the media, did I just mow the grass? something like that.

Jazz music is essential

Listened to the music show on the ABC Radio National which interviewed Jazz legend Wayne Shorter and was blown away...interview Wayne Shorter                       I am so influenced like most of us by music and especially by JAZZ.  The interview covers the life and influences that shaped Mr. Shorter musical career. Additionally searching the website I also found the artists website Wayne Shorter.                                                     Must listen to this interview

Skeleton craft wheels

The flying craft was fitted with landing gear in hopes of a soft and technical landing, this was later scrapped due to my partner suggesting more suggestive of an underwater craft, that is the submarine to look like a flying sub not a flying aero plane. This stage of the work is most exciting as the skin begins to be suggestive and has x-ray quality. I want to do more of  this.  The inspiration was the Spirit of St.Louis,  Lindbergh's plane during the crossing of the Trans-Atlantic.

The culmination of an effort that saw a work go up and come down, a success as one sculptor tries to encourage freedom of speech and freedom of expression despite obstacles continually put in the way to "what ever you do don't disturb the guests"  What a joke.  What about the support of artists? Far from it.  Pretty good to silence a room, must have had the impact it was intended.  Thanks to my mates new and old.

Here is the shadow which says it all.... Submarine,  Isn't it funny how the cave painters influence your work study them, admire them and find the notion of shadows on the wall return to inform the three dimensional work.  Defining an image that is what a shadow does. Far out. I love the illusion of real, Photoshop by Lynda both images real, combined to tell a story.

A joint to start the ideas off :pivot

The original idea of Underwear was from the beginning to have a joint.  That is the pivot point at the bottom for the work to be effected  by the weather.  I had the idea for this work to be moved by the wind and to have the feeling that it was unstable.  This then became a worry due to the mechanical engineering required and what materials would be used.  I first thought of having a spring, then spring like resistance to and from the armature that would be in the ground, and lastly agreed with my mate Lloyd about using a torsion bar inside the existing steel armature.  This has been a satisfactory outcome as the work is swaying back and forth and of course moves with an airfoil wing reaching into the air nearly 5 meters off the ground. 

Scale is everything. The human scale is everything. and as I look for the next work to begin I can say success is determined by intent and form colliding.  The counterbalance is not only off center away from forward but also off center away side to side, this has the effect of the work pointing toward the ground.  The intent of the wing striking the ground and tip holding up the work was intended to position the sub in an altered state and create new meaning by hanging the fuselage up above the viewers head to underscore Underwear- Underwhere.  Anyone who knows me knows my indifference to politics and word play.  I also have a simple life.  ha  Well maybe neither of those is true, I do go on.

Wings in Flight Crate

Revisiting the time in North Carolina and the show at the Art Museum where I hung two birds above the orchestra that opened the event. It was a Juried show and what a thrill to be again in the spotlight. Looking forward to show in Australia maybe soon at the University Sunshine Coast.

Saw Harry Manx at the Woomby pub and talked to him afterwards about the video/slides to his song "Something of your Grace" and told him how I was inspired by his work. Really good to see him smile about teaching kids about failure and how it is so important to talk about these kinds of issues.

The crate was necessary because there seemed a hurricane every season that would land on the doorstep in Carolina.

Working on a new bird at the Mens' Shed Nambour and learning Auto Cad for teaching.

Hollow body and Ibis or again an egret to regret!  would be good to think about the Egyptians homage to the Ibis and contrast that against the Ibis over the Landfills that are dirty and thought of as a disgusting bird, wow, how strange because it is mirroring our disgusting wasteful ways....scavenger of refuse....how long before that's us ?

Coltrane's Jive

 “Coltrane’s Jive”

Artist’s Statement: "Coltrane’s Jive" signifies power and violence, a single-minded machine, crude and unvarnished, offered up as the saviour of Australia’s failing economy. The work suspends thought on a J-curve trajectory: Australia the prisoner of a runaway privatised coal industry propped up by a ‘railroading government’. Locked within the rails of economic determinism, it is drawn toward the inevitable conclusion of exhaustion and impoverishment, leaving us empty handed for future generations. Coltrane’s Jive is an in-your-face predicament/dilemma: a collusion of technology and economics resulting in profits before sustainable energy solutions. The structural violence of no choice― the one way agenda― delivers injustice for all social classes. There is no happy-go-lucky take home message, just a stark reality ― one we must all come to face. As an environmental activist and artist my work is self-consciously orientated towards commentary upon the tragic and wholly preventable social and ecological crisis into which we are heading.

Interestingly this is a work that I did utilising the rubber from a tire shredding company next door to the gallery in Memphis. The coal and shredded tire used as a rich source of black is interesting as it is energy resource and an energy rich material. The numeral progression is an observation that this is the beginning of all things counted, even and odd and the rule of addition and subtraction, these are the numbers one needs..exception to zero!...from the first even number..
Similar too are the uses of rust as colour as with Coltrane's Jive. It is fun to extend the drawing surface on the floor as the tire shreds are easily laid down. Wondering about coal as the drawing medium.?

Show coming up on November 3rd

 I think the creative energy that comes for me is more sporadic than systematic, and they both compliment each other, the stage of inspiration turns into a system, even though some may say this system looks like chaos.....this is where explaining gets a bit tough, I look around to try and understand what I have at my disposal and use things at hand.  I often question what the meaning of necesity and luxury is.  How to make something simple or complex by fashioning the parts, depending on the additive or subtractive method, challenges meaning and function.  There is a bit more to it than putting stuff together, it begins with an idea, and then letting go of some of the force and let the "naturals" take precedence, Control is optional....If that may look like chaos...well it is .....

"Flight of a Course"  is a work that speaks about flight through the use of metephor with both feather and spoon form.  Inspiration comes from growing up in St.Louis and later in North Carolina. The airplane has impressed upon me at an early age.  Charles Lindbergh in St. Louis with his solo flight across the atlantic, and the Wright Brothers from the beginning with their epic suspension, are examples of fearlessness that future leaders of tommorrow seek.  As a sculptor the intuitive sense of balance is a tool of discovery as well as a practical element of constructing.  Assymetry is a subtle reminder of imperfection and the human condition and is evident in the distribution of weight leaning toward the spoon.

 Innovation and exploration are characteristics of all artists and must be supported through teaching students how to challenge outcome based learning, and favor inquiry based learning which inherently involves risk taking in education.  Without the challenge for failure, our future remains wrapped in cotton wool.

One might wonder what the ,,,,,is it supposed to be?  What could it be?  or just Let it Be!  Interesting the asymmetrical balance that causes it to be slightly heavier and move to a point then swing back and of course the Pendulum comes to mind, likeness to a metronome? all these things are questions even the creator ponders. why did I choose to do this? what can I understand about this work?  This is a fine work and proud to wonder what the bloody hell it is?

The work called "Flight of a Course" as it was in the studio working out the details before showing in the Noosa Regional Gallery, the work is meant to be touched as with most kinetic sculpture it must move and the impetuous is the human connection and action.

The catapult is a functioning kinetic sculpture that uses a spoon shaped mallet which when released projects an object.  The catapult is among the first demonstrations of trajectory from which Newton and other mathematicians could calculate the distance and velocity an object will travel. It also became known as the first military hardware used in combat. 


Funnily enough this is to me a study of the use of kinetic sculpture as a way of storing energy for the hurling of humour at a government unwilling to do the right thing. 


Why can't we get smart and stop the burning of carbon? Where is the commitment to funding truly clean energy solutions? 
It is absolute stupidity for us to keep doing what we know is the wrong thing to do.  We teach our kids one thing and do the opposite.
Time to fight for what is right and start our own revolution.

 The idea of suspension is very foreign to the human condition, I am amazed at the wonder of flight as most of us are, however as it relates to the future and energy production, I am excited that looking at our past we found innovation and invention during the industrial revolution that we can go into this new 'decade of transition' by invention and thinking of flight may get us there,... where renewable energy in the form of wind turbines and using the natural elements such as suspension and science can take us. I am still interested in the concept of what is luxury and what is necessity, in the past it has been luxury with cheap fossil fuels, now it is necessity that should be driving our innovation, and that is as contemporary as it gets, with the democrats and republicans in a battle, I see this as most important to teach children we may need to look at art differently, that is why I am excited about combining art and engineering. Flight of a course is foremost about balance and from an engineering point of view it is important that friction is the limited, and the simple concept of balance is a great starting point for energy harnessing.  I am a huge fan of Martin Puryear as his forms are simple, provocative, and speak of dreamlike reproductions of utility. The open ended interpretation is what I strive for using metaphor as the narrative. Simple is difficult for me because there seems so much to say. As with Puryear the materials are important and that is why wood and metal speak to me at the moment. I am interested in the primitive both sculptural and drawing and painting.

        "Homage to Our Fertile Land"

The continuing theme of flight and suspension seems to be of importance to my inner consciousness, it is something that has been an issue originating in the great state of North Carolina where the island life on Topsail Island discovered the birds of the wetlands, ocean flight underwater with the sea turtles and the notion of floating in a canoe with my trusty companion sable, a black lab that served as companion and ballast.  I recall the feather, the canoe and the Wright Brothers leap off Kill Devil Hills initiating the first flight.  Simple as it may be fashioning some wood and material to a flying machine, the study of flight has long since been instrumental as inspiration.

I am now working on some things that are topical with spoons and the feather, the boat floats and the feather ...floats too, where these two meet is where the juice is.....thinking in wood....need a welder for some of the finer tuning instruments, mechanical and function..wish on a star....greg,   click on follow and keep a smile
